Painting and Audiovisual Process

I begin with a large wood panel (24 x 48 or larger) toned in the color family of my video subject: environments, wildlife and textural occurrences shot in both natural and artificial light.

Once enough footage is collected, I project the dailies onto the blank panel and carve out abstract points of interest. The projector is then turned off and I paint free-hand, loosely connecting segments. I then return to shooting video, this time searching for imagery to connect with my free-hand work.

This back-and-forth continues until I’m satisfied with the overall visual result, alongside the editing rhythm and choice of music.
